Chapter 1

Hiei looked around, past the trees that stood in front of him. He sat down at the base of the tree closest to him. All day he had been playing cat and mouse with the demon he had been hunting. He was exhausted. He closed his eyes and leaned his head against the bark of the tree trunk. Hiei sighed and looked around once more before standing. He was hit once more with the pain of exhaustion. Suddenly, he smelled the sweet aroma of roses.

“Kurama?” He asked the empty forest around him. He quickly jumped up into the same tree he had leaned against, and sat on one of the tree’s branches and sat in silence. Soon, the smell of roses got thicker and Hiei could see the fox boy below him.

“I took care of that demon, Hiei.”

“I could have gotten him, if you hadn’t have interfered,” Hiei said still hidden by the tree’s branches.

“Your tired, and need a break. You shouldn’t be pushing yourself beyond the point of exhaustion. I just gave you a little break. You could be a little grateful every now and then.”

Hiei sat in silence for a moment. Then he replied with a quiet, “Thanks.”

Kurama sat at the base of the tree, where Hiei had sat before. From where he sat, Hiei could see the top of Kurama’s red hair. He watched silently as the wind blew Kurama’s red hair back and forth effortlessly.

“Your tired Hiei. Go on and sleep. I’ll make sure you aren’t bothered,” Kurama said quietly.

“I don’t want or need anyone to watch me while I sleep. I’m not some little kid.”

And yet, for some unexplained reason, deep down he did want to sleep with Kurama watching over him. As if on cue, he was hit with exhaustion’s force once again. He looked down at Kurama, who had pulled out some strange plant. As he fell victim to the plant’s effects, Hiei could hear Kurama speaking softly.

“Sleep well. I’ll be here when you wake up.”

Hiei suddenly felt safe. A feeling he hadn’t felt in so many years.

Kurama sat at the base of the tree. Above him, he could hear Hiei’s soft breathing. He hoped he had done the right thing by using one of his plants to make Hiei sleep. He looked up and could see Hiei’s small form leaning against the tree trunk. He noted that Hiei looked as he were in pain, and every now and then he would let out a small groan. Kurama wished that he could help Hiei with whatever was on his mind. He knew that Hiei wouldn’t tell him what was wrong, and in a way, that upset Kurama greatly. When something was wrong, he did tell Hiei. At least, when Hiei would listen to him. He wondered if Hiei realized how deeply he cared for him.

Kurama heard a noise and found that it was just Hiei talking in his sleep. Kurama smiled up towards Hiei. Then he heard it. In his sleep, Hiei had mumbled Kurama’s name. He now wished deeply that somehow he could find out what Hiei was dreaming about. A new thought popped into Kurama’s head. Did Hiei care for him as much as he cared for Hiei? Or, did Hiei care even more? Kurama would just have to find out. He smiled and went off.

Hours later, Hiei woke up to find that Kurama was no where to be found. “Kurama?” He asked. Receiving no answer, he got up quickly and jumped down. Using his third eye, he was able to find Kurama. When he reached Kurama, he noticed that Kurama wasn’t breathing.

“Kurama? What’s wrong?”

Getting no answer, Hiei quickly tried to wake Kurama up. Again, there was no reply from Kurama. Hiei sat for a moment, not really knowing what to do. “Ku… rama…” Hiei closed his eyes. He felt helpless and weak. Then, without Hiei realizing it, Kurama opened his eyes and smiled up at Hiei. So, Hiei really did care for him, after all. Silently, he wrapped his arms around Hiei, hugging him. Hiei’s eyes shot open and he pushed Kurama away.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“What?” Kurama seemed a little hurt.

“I thought you really were dead. Don’t ever do that again!”

“I just wanted to know… never mind. I’m sorry.”

Hiei looked at Kurama. He really was scared because he thought that Kurama was dead. That hug. Why did he want to be hugged by Kurama so badly? To prove that Kurama was alive and well, and not some ghost? He couldn’t understand what was going on.

Kurama looked at Hiei. He could tell that Hiei cared for him, but did he really have to shove him so hard when he had tried to hug him? Hiei seemed scared for some reason. Kurama watched as Hiei’s facial expressions changed to a look of confusion.

“Lets go home Hiei.”

“I am home. Go home Shuuichi.”

Kurama paused. Was that the first time Hiei had called Kurama by his human name? Kurama stood up and turned around, facing his back towards Hiei. “I’m sorry Hiei,” Kurama said and walked off.

Hiei sat in silence. Maybe he had been too harsh on Kurama, but right now he was so confused. His feelings were a mess and he was well aware of it. He hadn’t felt this way about someone before. He wanted someone who could explain things to him, but he knew that there was no such person, except Kurama that he could talk to. He stood up and looked towards the sky. Then he looked back down and walked off.
